Girona, a city with great historical past since it was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. Half way between the sea and the mountains, Girona enjoys a privileged emplacement. Unlike other big cities, Girona, still preserves an ancient part with an intense medieval environment.
The Barri Vell (Old quarter) still preserves fingerprints of its history as testimony of the centuries of living together many different cultures. It possesses unique elements in Europe like the Carolingian Wall, one of the most extensive defenses structures used on Europe; the Jewish quarter with its numerous small streets that were forming the call that has a synagogue and centers of Cabbalistic studies, La Plaça de l'oli and The Plaça del Vi still keep all its flavor, there you will find jewels like La Fontana d'or made of Palatial medieval architecture style; the cathedral of Romanesque origin raises with its 23 meters of light from its Gothic nave, known as widest of the world. In its interior you will find one of the textile jewels of the Catalan Romanesque, the holly creation tapestry. The Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligans is another of the key pieces of the religious architecture. The church of Sant Nicolau, a Romanesque temple which apses and octogonales domes deserve your attention. Sant Doménech's convent of Gothic style is a great example of the importance of the religious orders in settling the population during the middle age time. A Capuchin convent shelters the Arabic baths, dated back on century Xll, raised on eight thin columns crowned by an octogonal dome... these are just some of the beauties that we can find in Girona old town.
Before crossing the river and getting into the modern city we can walk along the Rambla de la Llibertat which is one of the most emblematic parts of Girona. Discover Eiffel's bridge or El Pont de Pedra from where we will be able to admire the typical building fronts painted with ochre tones.
At the other side of the river, we will find the most beautiful examples of the Catalan modernism signed by Rafael Masó. Buildings like Teixidor's factory, La casa de la Punxa...and at another side we will be able to discover the Parc de la Devesa that with its woodland of banana plantations contrasts with the medieval architecture.
